John, a theology teacher -Find some good teachers, is what I say! I could exhort you to try not to be too disappointed if you run through a bunch before you find some with whom you can communicate effectively but you learned that in High School, didn't you? This is actually another two parter. This first part is narrative because I'm telling you about my theology teacher, John. The second part will be a study outline, which is what John taught me. You'll see. John, at the time I met him was 40. Single parent of two adolescent boys, computer programmer, way back before the days of the telnet teleconferencing even. If you don't know what that is, think chat room with stone tablets. Good 'e-nuff. John, incidentally was one of two teachers who also tried to get me interested in computers, just after the days of writing everything to mag tape....cassette tape. Poor guy. If you were not into computers back then and can't figure out what I just said, don't sweat it, it's not a pretty part of computer history. He tried really hard, G*d love him for it. Not only was I not 'getting it', I was r e a l l y not interested. I should describe John a little, it will give you a picture of the nature of this study group and why it is so successful. John was a large man. He enjoyed the status of tallest for two or so years until a new student came along. John was a former rebel of the first order, i.e. former biker, bar bouncer, blah, blah, blah...And he was an outstanding teacher. John had studied for something like ten years before he became our theology teacher. He developed the study habits I use to this very day. The most important thing to me, other than his astonishing intellect was, John was a r e a l human bean. Warts, sins, poor health and all. He kept his motorcycle by the way, told us it was fuel efficient. O-kaaay. For all his former rebellion, John was totally submitted to the L*rd's directives. He exhorted us to be submissive as well. Ahhhh.....sometimes that exhortation was received, sometimes it rolled off like water on a ducks back. Either way he was in reallity commissioned to present the face of the Father's love to a bunch of church-burned, scripture neophytes. John was circumspect about his 'conversion'. However, he used to describe it with this saying: I can play any man's game as long as I know the rules. Problem with man-made rules is men keep changing the rules. When I read G*d's rules, they never changed. I figured it was something I should learn to master 'cause the playing field never changed.John was also an outstanding chess and poker player. Begining to get the picture........? John had some health problems. They were obvious, we never commented on them, we did form worried little prayers from time to time. John was our appointed teacher, whom G*d saw fit to lend to us, that was good enough for us. However, John was very clear, no make that insistent, he was not a pastor. John got pressed into pastoral ministry by us on a pretty regular basis. He firmly tried to shove us to an appointed pastoral-type. We shoved back. It was a draw. .... continued in [ "Scripture Neophytes" ] [ Publication Info ] G*d Bless ~ We live to serve ~ This newsletter is funded by the sponsor above. To learn more about their products
